Growing Success of the Lynhales Hall Gardening Club

Lynhales Hall Nursing Home in Lyonshall delivers a motivating programme of activities to keep residents living with Dementia and other complex needs active and engaged.

The arrival of Spring has marked the return of the ever-popular ‘Lynhales Hall Gardening Club’ which sees residents growing and nurturing a whole range of seeds, flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

Set in sumptuous surroundings with its one-mile driveway of undulating trees, ponds, and blooms, you can certainly see why residents are inspired to be green-fingered after spending time in the Lynhales Hall grounds. Following the success of last year’s club, raised beds have been built by the Maintenance Team to contain this year’s plants.

Residents agree that gardening is a powerful therapeutic tool to improve quality of life and alleviate stress. The act of planting and looking after crops gives residents purpose and enjoying the harvest provides a sense of achievement. This was felt last year after the fantastic crop of potatoes were cooked by the home’s Chefs.

Already this year, the club have planted sunflower seeds for the annual ‘Sunflower Growing Competition’ as well as sweet peas and strawberry plants. A Horticultural Therapist from the Herefordshire Growing Point attends to provide demonstrations and support participation, and the families of residents are invited to attend to share the enjoyment.

Lifestyle Coordinator, Mary, has said:
“Gardening Club is a real hit with residents again this year. We notice an uplift in their mood and it is a great source of social interaction and sensory stimulation. Residents Frank and Marjorie particularly engage with sessions and we’re looking forward to growing potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, and lettuce over the coming weeks.”

The Lynhales Hall Gardening Club takes place every Tuesday at 10:30am. The family and friends of residents are invited, subject to current coronavirus guidance. Please confirm attendance ahead of arrival by calling 01544 340 238 or by emailing admin.lynhales@rotherwood-group.co.uk.
