Historical Legacy:
Colwall Malvern Water boasts a rich history dating back centuries. Since the 16th century, its natural spring water has been a symbol of purity and vitality. In 1850, Schweppes initiated commercial-scale distribution, leading to the town's growth during the Victorian era. The site housed the first 'water cure' centre, attracting notable figures like Charles Darwin, who sought its alleged healing properties for his ailing daughter. Malvern Water, once an NHS prescription, has been a favourite of the Royal Family for over 400 years.
Legacy Transition:
Over the years, the site underwent changes, including Coca Cola Enterprises' takeover in 1987. In 1992, Coca-Cola Schweppes produced a limited quantity of fine glass water decanters to celebrate 100 years of the Colwall bottling works. The design included an illustration of the Malvern Hills on the rear of the decanter that could be seen through the contents. The decanters are now rare collector’s items and almost impossible to secure.
In October 2010, the factory closed due to no longer being able to produce enough Malvern Water on the scale it needs to compete in today's bottled water sector. Modern bottled water plants are around 10 times the size of Colwall and can often produce more water in a day than the site could in a month.
A New Chapter:
In a significant development, Rotherwood Healthcare is in process of building a state-of-the-art care home on the grounds of Colwall Malvern Water. This project aims to seamlessly blend historical charm with modern amenities, creating a space that pays homage to the site's heritage while serving as a beacon of care and support for the local community.
